Forum PostHey Terry (or other engine type dudes)

The mighty shovelhead made it through almost all of last season with no major issues then the last couple of rides it started acting up. Symptoms are as follows:

2 primer kicks, switch on, kick like you mean it and it fires on first or second kick. Hold the throttle open a bit so it doesn't die and get a deep rumble from the pipes. Start riding and by the time you get a couple of blocks it is warmed up to idle on its own. Ride a bit farther (6 blocks or so) and you start noticing that the exhaust sounds a bit sharper. A few more blocks and it exhaust note from the front cylinder gradually goes up to almost a crackle. A few blocks after the crackle starts you start hearing a sharp cracking sound from the front pipe that seems like maybe it hits with each firing of the front cylinder. I didn't think to check if the front pipe was getting exceptionally hotter than normal (like glowing in the dark)

I'm thinking that maybe as it heats up the exhaust valve on front cylinder is binding somehow and not closing completely? Bad valve spring? Galled valve stem? Gunk on valve stem causing it to bind? Bad voodoo? Too many beans in its breakfast?

I'd think that if it was a burned valve the problem would occur all the time whether hot or cold. Compression test on cold engine shows front and rear cylinder within 2 lbs.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Smartass remarks? (I probably deserve those)
